French bulldogs, affectionately known as Frenchies, are one of the most popular breeds in the United States. They are known for their loveable personality, distinctive bat-like ears, and compact size, but ownership comes with special responsibilities and considerations. Our Creature Comforts Veterinary Service team guides you through caring for your Frenchie, including their veterinary care, diet, exercise, grooming, and considerations specific to this fascinating breed.

French bulldog health considerations

Because of their unique anatomy and genetics, French bulldogs are prone to various health issues, including:

  • Brachycephalic syndrome — French bulldogs have short, flat noses, which can lead to breathing difficulties and makes them susceptible to heatstroke, because they cannot efficiently regulate their body temperature. Knowing this, avoid strenuous exercise and keep your dog cool, in a well-ventilated environment, especially during hot weather.
  • Hip dysplasia — This genetic condition, which affects the hip joints, can lead to severe arthritis and pain. Regular veterinary exams by our Creature Comforts Veterinary Service team can help manage this condition, most importantly by ensuring your dog maintains a healthy weight, since obesity can exacerbate hip dysplasia.
  • Skin allergies and infections — Many Frenchies have sensitive skin and are prone to allergies and infections, including ear infections. Groom your dog regularly with hypoallergenic products and clean your dog’s ears at least monthly with a dog ear-cleaning solution to prevent skin and ear infections.
  • Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) — IVDD affects the spine and can cause pain and mobility issues, so avoid activities that strain your Frenchie’s back, such as jumping.

High-quality diet for your French bulldog

Proper nutrition is crucial for your French bulldog’s health. Our veterinarian can recommend a nutritious dog food for small breeds or specifically for French bulldogs, as well as their appropriate caloric intake and portion control.  Frenchies are susceptible to obesity and its associated health problems, so follow the feeding guidelines on the product’s label or our team’s recommendations. Hydration is also vital for good health, and you must ensure your dog has plenty of water. Refill their bowls often, so their water is always cool and refreshing.

French bulldog exercise needs

While French bulldogs are not overly active, they still require regular, moderate exercise to stay healthy. Take your dog for short, 15-minute walks a few times each day, avoiding warm weather hours. Indoor play sessions will also provide exercise and mental enrichment, so ensure your Frenchie has various interactive toys, such as treat-dispensing puzzles.

French bulldog dental care

Like many small-breed dogs, French bulldogs can be affected by dental issues, such as periodontal disease, which leads to pain and tooth loss. To prevent oral problems, brush your Frenchie’s teeth daily, or several times a week at a minimum, and offer dental chews and appropriate toys to help keep their teeth clean. Most importantly, do not skip their wellness exams, where our veterinary team will assess your pet’s teeth and gums and recommend dental cleanings or procedures.

Training and socializing your French bulldog

French bulldogs are intelligent and curious—but stubborn. Start your Frenchie’s training early. Teach them basic commands, such as “Sit,” “Stay,” and “Come,” and use positive rewards, such as treats and verbal praise, to reinforce their training. Frenchies are social dogs who thrive on companionship and exposing them when they are young to various environments, people, and other pets will help develop a well-rounded temperament.

French bulldog veterinary wellness

Wellness care will keep your Frenchie in excellent health by ensuring their preventive care, such as vaccines and parasite prevention, is up-to-date. Frenchies may require additional veterinary visits to monitor, detect, and address any predisposed health conditions, such as respiratory problems or skin infections. Our team will also recommend nutrition, diet, and dental care for your Frenchie.

Caring for your French bulldog requires understanding and anticipating their unique needs and health considerations. You can ensure your Frenchie enjoys a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life by providing the proper nutrition, regular exercise, grooming, and veterinary care these special breeds require. Owning a French bulldog is rewarding but comes with the responsibility of meeting their special needs. Schedule your dog’s wellness exam with our Creature Comforts Veterinary Service team soon. We love Frenchies as much as you do.
